This long-legged, boldly patterned, resourceful bird of prey is found in the U.S. mainly in Texas. Smaller populations occur in Florida and Arizona. Of late, wanderers have been widely noted throughout the U.S. Audubon’s climate model forecasts substantial changes for the Crested Caracara, with suitable summer climate space shifting radically across much of the Southeast and only 15% of the current core range stable by 2080. Forecast winter climate space shows a similar shift. Future favorable winter climate is concentrated mainly along the coasts and near the Mississippi River, whereas future summer climate is more widely dispersed.
