Of the Empidonax flycatchers, the long-winged but short-tailed Hammond’s is the one most strongly associated in summer with conifer forests. Habitat preferences vary regionally: in parts of the range, the species favors dry ponderosa pine stands; elsewhere, it requires moister spruce–fir forests. Audubon's climate model projects a 67 percent loss of current summer range by 2080, necessitating aggressive protection and management of this chubby flycatcher’s conifer forest dominions.
