Any effort to protect the Willet must first acknowledge that there are two highly distinct populations of this hefty sandpiper: inland breeders (called “Western Willets”) that winter widely on ocean coasts; and coastal breeders (called “Eastern Willets”) that winter largely south of the United States. Audubon's climate model forecast of a 70 percent loss of current winter range by 2080 refers mainly to the inland/western birds. The model shows potential expansion northward and inland, but areas of wintering habitat along the coasts are also threatened with sea level rise and development.
