This is one of our most adaptable terns, breeding coastally and inland, migrating through a wide variety of habitats, and wintering across a broad swath of real estate. Audubon’s climate model forecasts a major shift of climate space in summer, with an 80 percent loss of current range. The species is highly colonial, and the loss of a few key breeding colonies—now or in the future—could doom regional populations.
